1. The Humble Beginnings (1940s–1960s)
The Migrant Founder: The journey began when Ramprasad Shaw, a migrant from Bihar, quit his British police job. He started a small roadside eatery called Janata Hindu Hotel near the Barrackpore railway station.
The Cheap “Pice Hotel”: It originally served basic Bengali meals—rice, dal, fish, and egg curries—for a few paise per plate. The primary customers were local daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, and commuters.
How It Got Its Name: In the 1960s, Ramprasad’s son, Dhiren Saha, and his Bengali wife took over. Customers fondly addressed the friendly couple as “Dada” (elder brother) and “Boudi” (sister-in-law). The nickname stuck so deeply that the family legally adopted “Saha” as their surname, and the restaurant was renamed Dada Boudi Hotel.

Resourceful but penniless, he set up a humble roadside stall selling basic rice and curry to local factory workers and daily wage earners. Ramnaresh was the “Dada” (elder brother) to his customers, and when he married his wife, Radha Shaw, she naturally became the beloved “Boudi” (sister-in-law) of the neighborhood.
The turning point came when Boudi stepped into the kitchen. Blending her traditional family spice secrets with Dada’s fierce work ethic, they decided to introduce biryani to their menu. At the time, biryani was considered a luxury item, reserved for elite Mughlai restaurants in central Kolkata. Dada and Boudi wanted to change that.
